On March 27, a water supply pipe burst on Pridonskaya Street in the village of Uryv-Pokrovka, Ostrogozhsky District. A member of the Patriot search group, who was part of the repair crew, noticed human bones in the soil. On April 3, the search team examined the pit and recovered the remains of seven people, including a child. No other artifacts were found initially.
The team reported the find to emergency services via 112 and handed the remains over to the police. They also notified the Ostrogozhsky District Investigative Committee. An examination determined that the remains are more than 55 years old.
Local authorities organized a «Memory Watch» to fully investigate the burial site. Including the first seven individuals, the remains of 44 people were recovered, among them eight children aged one to five years. Alongside the bones, searchers discovered coins from various eras (the oldest from 1744), fragments of ceramics and dishes, wrought nails, a piece of German barbed wire, and two bullets.
According to a German aerial photograph taken before the occupation of the village, houses and a church once stood at the excavation site.
